We bring film to research and research to film.
Liminal Works was founded in 2022 by Charlotte Kühlbrandt and Maayan Matz Ashkenazi. We specialise in working with academics to produce creative short films based on research projects. Through our own academic work, we have a thorough understanding of the research process, ethics, participatory design, and in-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods. We occupy the liminal space between research and filmmaking and our aim is to help researchers make an impact beyond academia.
why film?
Our films are captivating and emotionally engaging. If you are working on a research project that is relevant to public audiences, you can reach these audiences through film. Our films have been successfully distributed online, screened at conferences, and selected for both science and mainstream film festivals. You can see some of our previous projects below.
why us?
We fuse academic expertise with film-making know-how. We understand both sides, and use this knowledge to translate academic research for public audiences using innovative visual methods. During this process, we offer researchers a creative space to communicate with new audiences, and tell the stories that are part of or behind their research. You can read more about us here.
what is the process?
We work collaboratively with researchers to create visual materials that connect to their work. We can either take the lead on developing an idea, or we can develop it together. It does not matter whether you have completed a project, whether it is ongoing, or whether you have not yet begun; we'll work with your research to create unique and engaging visuals. You can learn more about our process here.
